Annotations for Demolition Lovers

Lyric: [Guitar Solo]
Annotation:
Debatably the coolest guitar solo in My Chemical Romance’s discography.

Lyric: Until this, I mean this, I mean this, until the end of
Annotation:
He is further confirming until there death that he means that he loves her and will always be by her side

Lyric: Until the end of every
Annotation:
The flow of the song is suddenly cut off, returning to a similar tune to the beginning of the song. With the way the song cuts off, it can be open for much interpretation. Perhaps the woman dies and the man grieves her. Perhaps the man dies and sets off the events for the next album. Perhaps the man just passes out and awakens to find his lover dead. It’s up to the listener to decide.

Lyric: Until the end of everything
Annotation:
The ominous foreshadowing implies that the characters recognize there will be an end, and it might even be soon.

Lyric: And after all the things
We put each other through and
Annotation:
This could be saying that the relationship isn’t good for either of them, but the narrator is still willing to die for her.

Lyric: Know how much I want to show you
 You’re the only one
Annotation:
The narrator wants to show his lover that she is the only one for him and always will. They are dying together because she is the only one for him and he’d rather die with her than live without her, despite the somewhat violent state of their relationship.

Lyric: And I feel like there’s nothing left to do
But prove myself to you, and we’ll keep it running
Annotation:
This guy’s character in the story has reached the point where he has either given up, or is being forced to give up when the law finally catches up to him. In this situation he thinks the only thing left to do is prove his love to her is to get in a car and “keep it running” until they end up facing the law in the desert, which is exactly what happens.

Lyric: I’m trying, I’m trying
To let you know just how much you mean to me
Annotation:
His actions in this song, and possibly the entire album, are acts to prove that he loves her no matter how difficult the relationship has or will become. These lines specifically are very important, because this idea and commitment evolves to become the entire concept of the following album Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, where the man kills 1000 evil men just to be reunited with her. If this song doesn’t prove what she means, that sure will.

Lyric: As lead rains will pass on through
 Our phantoms forever, forever
Annotation:
‘Lead rain’ is another way of phrasing a ‘shower of bullets,’ or simply ‘gunfire.’ He’s saying that they’ll love even in death. This turns out to be true in the following album when he comes back from the dead to try and reunite with her once again.

Lyric: Until the end, until this pool of blood
Annotation:
He’s saying that he’ll stay with her until death, which can be seen at the end of their adventure where similar lyrics are used: And as we’re falling down, and in this pool of blood It can be seen, though, in the next album that he stays with her far beyond that.

Lyric: Hand in mine, into your icy blues
Annotation:
This line is describing one of the two “lovers.” “Icy blues” is most likely referring to eye color, but it could also be referring to someone who has a sadness about themselves. In this context, it’s most likely the eyes, since they’re holding hands. Frontman Gerard Way dated his hairstylist Eliza Siep, who had bright blue eyes. Although it’s possible she’s the one he’s talking about, it’s unlikely as they didn’t date for long.

Lyric: Like scarecrows that fuel this flame
 We’re burning forever and ever
Annotation:
If you burn a scarecrow they burn bright because of the hay. He’s saying he still believes that there love is there, burning like a flame. I believe it’s always been there.

Lyric: I’ll meet your eyes, I mean this forever
Annotation:
The story ends as it started; the narrator is staring into his lover’s eyes. The last thing he will see is her, and he promises to love her ‘forever’. This promise can be seen in the storyline of the following album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.

Lyric: And as we’re falling down, and in this pool of blood
And as we’re touching hands, and as we’re falling down
And in this pool of blood, and as we’re falling down
I’ll see your eyes, and in this pool of blood
Annotation:
The lovers are dying, but they’re dying together. It’s possible their death was predicted, as seen earlier in the song when they brought bullets with them. The phrase ‘this pool of blood’ can be seen earlier in the song: Until the end, until this pool of blood

Lyric: All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this
All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this
All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this
All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this
Annotation:
People are like bullets. They only hurt others because it is in their nature. This could also be a reference to the title of the album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.

Lyric: Like a bed of roses
There’s a dozen reasons in this gun
Annotation:
Traditionally, roses come in a bouquet or set of 12. In this line, he is saying there are many reasons they’re being killed, but it also suggests lying on a bed of roses at your funeral.

Lyric: As days fade and nights grow
 And we grow cold
Annotation:
Similarly to ‘as snow falls on desert sky’, time won’t affect his love. Alternatively, this line could also be about their eventual and possibly premature death due to the lifestyle they’ve chosen. “Demolition Lovers” preceded the following album in which in a man must kill a thousand others in order to see his dead lover. This song is where the two die, as seen in later lines: And as we’re falling down, and in this pool of blood And as we’re touching hands, and as we’re falling down

Lyric: As snow falls on desert sky
Annotation:
This line could mean a variety of things. The first is that they will stay together throughout any measures- such as changes in seasons. Alternatively, snow never falls in a desert. As seen earlier in the song, he does love her, but it’s not working out and their love is as impossible as snow in the desert. Then again, both options come with beautiful imagery, so it could mean that their love is unlikely but amazing.

Lyric: I would drive on to the end with you
A liquor store or two keeps the gas tank full
Annotation:
He’s again justifying how much she means to him and the lengths he would go to in order for them to get away together. He could be implying that they want to rob liquor stores as a way of funding their actions, but also that they’re used to drinking as a way of dealing with their problems.

Lyric: And then I’d say to you, ”We could take to the highway
With this trunk of ammunition, too”
I’d end my days with you, in a hail of bullets
Annotation:
Our lovers aren’t scared to use lethal force in their escapade. He loves her so much that he’s ready to die for her- even in rather terrible ways.
